Argentina files complaint to international agencies over UK's military spending on Malvinas
The national government has filed a complaint today to several international organizations over the "excessive military spending on Malvinas Islands" by the United Kingdom.
The letter was submitted by Foreign Affairs Minister Héctor Timerman to the United Nations' Decolonization Committee; the Organization of American States (OAS); the UNASUR; the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); the Mercosur trade bloc and the Group of 77 nations.
In the statement, the Ministry refers to an "unjustified increase in the already overblown military spending in the Malvinas Islands."
"Alleging a supposed, illogical Argentine 'threat', the United Kingdom is trying to defend a military presence worthy of a colonial power," the missive continues.
"In the face of the obligation that weighs over both sides to find a solution to the controversy, the United Kingdom has confirmed with this announcement that it is relying on weapons and aggression. In a wholly different approach Argentina holds that only talks and negotiation, sticking to international law, should take priority in solving international conflicts and putting an end to this anachronistic colonial scene which has lasted over 182 years.
"The United Kingdom is not unaware that successive democratic Argentine governments have installed as state policy the mandate enshrined in the Argentine Constitution, to seek a solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgia and Sandwich Islands and surrounding maritime regions, in line with international law," the Ministry reiterates, before calling on the UK to sit down for negotiations
