President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has called Pope Francis to express both hers and Argentineans’ condolences for the death of the pontiff’s relatives. On Tuesday, Emanuel Bergoglio, the pope’s nephew, and his family suffered a car accident. Emanuel’s wife and their two little children died.
A statement by the Holy See confirmed Ms. Kirchner calling the Argentine pontiff today.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight yesterday when the small car carrying the family slammed into the back of a cargo truck and with the passenger side being crumpled beneath it on the Córdoba-Rosario highway, said police sources.
The crash immediately killed Emanuel Bergoglio’s 38-year-old wife, Valeria Carmona, and his two infant boys, two-year-old and the other eight- months, were declared dead at the emergency centres but Bergoglio managed to survive and was transferred to the Hospital Pasteur de Villa María where he was operated on.
