Department of State budget provides for significant assistance to Ukraine next year
KYIV, June 4 /Ukrinform/. The U.S. Congress is elaborating a draft law on financing the U.S. Department of State for domestic and foreign operations, which provides, inter alia, for allocation of over half a billion dollars in aid to Ukraine.
The document has been approved in the relevant subcommittee of the House of Representatives, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"I am proud that these much needed funds, in case they are allocated, will support Ukrainians and their response to Russian aggression. These funds will contribute to security and boost economy of Ukraine," Voice of America quotes chairman of the House Appropriations Committee Hal Rogers as saying.
The bill, which determines funding for the Department of State in 2016, totaling $47.8 billion, provides for assistance to Ukraine in the amount of at least $524 million. However, the bill does not mention whether military assistance or lethal weapons could be provided.
At the same time, the bill limits the aid to any country, which has taken steps to support the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
