The US State Department has reacted to the letter sent by the Argentine government to Secretary of State John Kerry before yesterday’s ruling, declaring the country in contempt of court. “We are following the situation closely,” a spokesperson from that entity expressed earlier today.
“Our stand is clear. It is in Argentine interests to normalize relations with all its bondholders,” the unnamed State Department source affirmed to AFP news agency.
Yesterday Argentina’s ambassador in Washington Cecilia Nahón delivered an official document where she warned over the legal risks that Federal Judge Thomas Griesa's decision could have.
According to Nahón, such ruling could have serious consequences, exposing the US government to legal responsibilities.
New York district judge Thomas Griesa declared Argentina in contempt of court due to the nation's actions in attempting to change debt jurisdictions as a result of the ongoing judicial conflict with holdout investors presided over by the US magistrate.
